Yosemite Sierra
View this Collection

A Yosemite resident for over forty years, Penny Otwell continues to be inspired by Yosemite's unique beauty.  "There is so much to see and explore in this Park, and I never tire of painting the rhythms of rocks, water courses, and forests."

Sierra Nevada Foothill Paintings
View this Collection

I am doing a series of paintings on the Sierra foothills this year and am showing some of this work in a show late in the year to benefit the SIERRA FOOTHILL CONSERVANCY.  A group of California artists have been asked to participate and we are painting on easement properties that will be or have been given to SFC.  It's imperative that land be set aside to allow open spaces to prevail for wildlife and native plants and for the enjoying of people.  See more at www.sfc.org

Watercolors

Most of these are field studies or imagined in my mind as color studies.  I love the transparency of watercolor on white paper.

Eastern Sierra Nevada Paintings

Otwell says, "When the Tioga Road opens in May, I'm over there!  The High Country of Yosemite and the High Desert of the eastern Sierra is one of my favorite places to be and to paint. The large expanse that your eye can see is exciting after painting in Yosemite's deep canyons."

The Great Central Valley of California

Like painting in the Eastern Sierra, Otwell enjoys painting in the Central Valley for the big views.  She says, "There is real beauty to this land with so many birds, wonderful cloud formations, vast orchards, and vistas as far as the eye can see."

Wildlife

Otwell photographs animals, works from life, and from drawings designed in the studio.

She loves painting birds and bears most, but also paints coyotes, and dogs and cats.

Collage and Acrylic Work

"As an artist in residence at Manzanar National Historic Site, I experimented with collage using Japanese papers. I especially like the crane motifs as I found folded paper cranes in the sageland around Manzanar on my daily walks. I 'imagine' they fly over the Sierra so they are incorporated into many Sierra landscape paintings.

Still Life Work

"Painting still life's requires a good set-up and light, interest in the subject, and allows me to pant whimsical ideas that filter into my head."

Other Art

I've done a collection of work for a show on Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead which is shown here.  From time to time, other artwork will appear here.  Enjoy!

Works on Paper

"I often do 'warm-up' paintings to loosen up and most of these paintings are working out ideas in a small study on paper rather than a full painting.  These are not plein air paintings, but ones inspired by ideas and play."

Giclee' Prints
View this Collection

The Yosemite Blue Bear image has been extremely popular so I made giclee' prints of the original pastel painting on paper.  There are three sizes and they come matted, signed, numbered, and come in a cellophane bag.
